Top 5 Things to do in Frontierland
Are you ready to experience the thrill of the Wild West? Look no further than Frontierland, the exciting land in Disneyland Paris where you can explore the rugged terrain and brave the elements. With so many adventures to discover, Frontierland is sure to be a highlight of your Disneyland Paris visit. It’s usually my first stop when I turn left at the bottom of Mainstreet!
Big Thunder Mountain
Are you ready to experience the wildest ride in the West? Look no further than Big Thunder Mountain at Disneyland Paris! This iconic attraction is a must-see for any thrill-seeker visiting the park. In 1996, the Disneyland Paris Press officer famously declared that “The Irish Built Big Thunder Mountain” - referring to the Irish team of imagineers and construction workers who created the attraction. It’s said the tools they brought were “too modern” so they had to go back to the drawing board with centuries-old tools for the authentic theming.
It’s quite a popular ride, so expect queues of about an hour at busy times. I recommend scheduling this ride either first thing in the morning (if you have Magic Time), during parades or last thing in the evening. Did you know you can be circling the mountain while the fireworks light up Sleeping Beauty’s Castle? The ride takes on a whole new level of excitement as you twist and turn through the darkness with only the glow of the moon and stars to guide you.
As you board your mine train, prepare to be transported to the Wild West and take a ride through a treacherous mountain range. This is the only version of Big Thunder Mountain globally that brings you under the river via tunnel. The entire attraction therefore takes place on an Island! You'll encounter a few seconds of complete darkness, sharp turns, sudden drops, and even an exploding mine shaft along the way. It's not just the ride itself that makes Big Thunder Mountain so special. The theming and attention to detail are truly remarkable. From the rusted mine carts to the creaky wooden structures, every aspect of the attraction immerses you in the Wild West setting.
Don't forget to keep left when the queue splits in two - some people have reportedly saved 15 minutes with this tip!
Thunder Mesa Riverboat Landing
Step aboard the Riverboat Landing at Disneyland Paris and embark on a leisurely journey through the heart of the park. This classic attraction takes you on a relaxing cruise down the tranquil waters of the Rivers of the Far West, giving you a unique perspective on the surrounding scenery and attractions.
As you board the riverboat, you'll feel a sense of calm wash over you. The gentle swaying of the boat, the sound of the water lapping against the hull, and the warm sun on your face create a peaceful and serene atmosphere that's perfect for escaping the hustle and bustle of the park. This is a great place for tired kids and grown-ups alike to recharge and take stock of the day so far!
As you make your way down the river, you'll pass by some of the most iconic attractions at Disneyland Paris, including Big Thunder Mountain and Phantom Manor. You'll also get a glimpse of the surrounding landscape, which includes a picturesque frontier town, a Native American village, and lush forests and meadows. But it's not just the scenery that makes the Riverboat Landing so special. The ride also features live narration, which provides interesting facts and insights into the history and culture of the American West. You'll learn about the pioneers who settled the region, the indigenous people who called it home, and the wildlife that inhabits the area.
And if you're a fan of classic Disney attractions, you'll appreciate the nostalgic charm of the Riverboat Landing. This ride has been a beloved staple at Disney parks around the world for decades, and its simple yet charming concept still holds up today. Sit back, relax, and let the Riverboat Landing take you on a journey through the heart of Disneyland Paris. It's the perfect way to unwind and appreciate the beauty and history of the American West.
Phantom Manor
Step into the world of Phantom Manor at Disneyland Paris and experience a thrilling journey through the supernatural. This iconic attraction combines spine-tingling suspense, immersive theming, and fun technology to create an unforgettable experience that will leave you breathless.
As you approach the eerie façade of Phantom Manor, you'll feel a chill run down your spine. The gothic architecture, gloomy setting, and haunting music set the tone for what's to come. Once you step inside, you'll be transported to the mysterious world of the Ravenswood family, a wealthy and powerful family with a dark secret.
As you board your Doom Buggy, you'll be guided through the dusty halls of the mansion and into a world of phantoms, ghosts, and apparitions. The ride takes you through a series of rooms, each with its own unique setting and story, as you unravel the mystery of the Ravenswood family and their cursed fate. The attention to detail in Phantom Manor is truly remarkable, with every corner of the attraction designed to immerse you in the spooky atmosphere. From the cobweb-covered chandeliers to the ghostly apparitions that seem to materialize out of nowhere, every element of the ride is carefully crafted to create an unforgettable experience.
And if you're a fan of special effects and technology, Phantom Manor will not disappoint. The use of audio-animatronics, projection mapping, and other fun technologies create an experience that feels both classic and modern at the same time.
Whether you're a fan of horror or simply love immersive storytelling, Phantom Manor is a must-see attraction at Disneyland Paris. Don’t forget there’s a meet and greet location in front of the Manor, where you can usually meet Mickey Mouse, Pluto or even Jack Skellington during Halloween and Christmas seasons.
Frontierland Playground
Sorry what? We’ve travelled all the way to Disneyland Paris and then you recommend a playground? Well, if you're looking for a fun and exciting place for your kids to burn off some energy, look no further than the Frontierland Playground.
Located in the heart of Frontierland, the playground features a sprawling play area filled with climbing structures, tunnels, slides, and other obstacles that will challenge and inspire your little ones. They can safely crawl through the various tunnels and tubes, climb to the top of the towering structures, and zoom down the winding slides for a rush of adrenaline. While your kids are playing, you can sit back and relax in the shade of the surrounding trees or enjoy a snack from one of the nearby vendors. The playground is also conveniently located near other attractions in Frontierland, so you can easily make it a part of your day at the park.
The Frontierland Playground is a must-visit destination for families with young children at Disneyland Paris. It was news to me when I visited with my then 4yr old that children of that age actually “need” play. They will exit the playground (begrudgingly) with more energy and hopefully a little less of a cranky head!

Bonus - Where to Eat?
Frontierland contains one of my favourite and best value places to eat in all of Disneyland Paris: Cowboy Cookout BBQ! You can get a roast breast of chicken, jumbo sausage, quarter rack of ribs, chips AND and a drink for €17! Plus, Minnie Mouse and Goofy regularly do a meet and greet close-by!
Another special mention for the famous turkey drumstick at the Overland Trail Cafe. At €9 its a handy snack if you don’t need a huge feed. Last Chance Cafe also has chicken nuggets for €8 and an unreal vegan chilli for €8. Topped off with the very handy “mobile order” feature! Nom nom nom!
